CURRENT PROJECTS

The Highway Department has a number of projects ongoing.  Some are temporary or seasonal, and others will last months or years.  If you have any questions, please contact this office.

SEASONAL:

Street Sweeping - The street sweeper is slowly making its way around town.  The sweeper will pick up sand and dirt from winter operations. It will not pick up leaves or yard debris.

Brush Cutting - While the summer progresses, the Highway Department, as well as the Parks Department in some cases, will be out cutting brush and mowing roadsides to improve or maintain visibility.  We will make every effort to leave the area free of debris.  As with most other things, our goal is to make the roads safe for travel.  If you notice an area where visibility is diminished, please call and we will get out there as soon as we can.

Drainage - We make every effort to keep the storm drains open, but it is possible that road debris or snowbanks will cover the drains.  Likewise, the drainage swales on the sides of some roads will become overgrown.   If a storm drain or swale is clogged near your home, please call us so that we can clear it as soon as possible.

ROAD PROJECTS:

Pleasant Street - the road was resurfaced with a binder coat and the culvert at the intersection of Park and Pleasant was reconstructed, with a rock wall built.  In June, we will be applying the top coat of asphalt.  This delay between coat applications has allowed us to identify weak areas and drainage problems, which will be corrected with the final coat.

Route 140/Hartford Ave East Interchange - ongoing, and moving forward.  Construction has begun and will continue throughout the summer.  It is strongly encouraged that alternate routes be taken.

Hartford Ave. East Road Repairs - This project is a number of years away.  Anticipating the engineering fees that can run $300,000.00, or more, the town is "saving" $20,000. per year out of our operating budget.   This will not cover the fees completely, and there will come a time when the town will have to vote to spend the balance of what is due.

Sandra Circle/Lori Lane - All catch basins are being replaced in June.   In July, the roads will be reclaimed and repaved.

Hartford Ave. West - Recent issues with delaminating cracksealing have forced us to make repairs to this road a priority.  After July, parts of the road will be repaired.

Miscoe Road - Parts of this road will be repaved to improve the overall condition of the road.

Mowry Street - Historically, water and ice make this road very difficult to travel.  We are investigating how the drainage issues at that location can be corrected.  After July, we will attempt to make some drainage improvements to mitigate the problem.

Neck Hill Road - the condition of this road warrants temporary repairs to make it passable.  This is not a solution to the problem, but will improve travel on that road.  We hope to get to this later in the year.

Town Wide - a number of roads will be 'cracksealed'.  Cracks in the road are filled with an asphalt product, and then coated with an anti-adherent product.  This product is sandy and will be present on the roads, so some care has to taken to avoid slippage while biking, walking or running.
